Photographer Simon Roberts travelled throughout Russia, for a year between July 2004 and August 2005, making pictures in over 200 locations and creating one of the most extensive, comprehensive photographic accounts of this vast country by a Westerner.

Motherland was published in March 2007 by Chris Boot Ltd.

Arja Hyytiäinen lives in Paris and Berlin. She studied in FAMU -Academy of Performing Arts in Prague under the guidance of Victor Kolar.Very interesting work…

Conscientious is a blog that predominantly deals with contemporary fine-art photography (even though it is also linked to other topics that the author might find interesting). It presents a selection of photographers, with the selection based on whether the author likes their work or find it interesting. It’s really as simple as that. In addition to showcasing photographers he also links to articles about photography, and he posts reviews of photography books and interviews with photographers.

This is a weblog about fine-art photography and more that I would easily recommend to everyone who deals with photography as an artists or as a curator or organizer.

the XVth Encuentros Abiertos de Fotografia will be held in August 2008 .

Argentinean and foreign photographers may submit their work until November 30th 2007 at the Argentinean School of Photography.

2155 Campos Salles St. Buenos Aires, from 3pm to 8 pm.

The outcomes will be released in March 2008.

• Works must be submitted in low resolution jpg digital files

• Each file that is submitted in CD or DVD is not supposed to contain more that 30 pieces and should be sent with the artist CV as well as a statement about the work.

• This material will be destroyed after the selection unless the artist picks it from the Argentinean School of Photography between the months of March and July 2008

Since its former meeting in August 1987 until the last one last year, these “Encuentros Abiertos de Fotografia” have been opening doors, minds and exhibition venues around the country as well as the media and officials whether they have supported these events or not.

We are fulfilled for having met the necessities of: out-growing, being beside oneself to gain space, adding to be meaningful and thus drawing the attention and acknowledgment that the photography deserves.

Being aware that in some way the Festival endorses the photographers who have joined in ,we have proposed ourselves to steer their inner growth development to deepen the road.

We think it is necessary to adapt proposals, restate strategies and outrange work selection criteria and room share.

We are considering shrinking the number of official exhibitions for this XV Festival whether in Buenos Aires or in the rest of the country, but we do not mean to renounce to the national nature that the Festival has got but to be more concrete and specific when proposing an exhibition inside the official circuit. We are also trying to remark the differentiation between official exhibitions and Off Festival.

We believe that this will end up improving the quality of the rooms and exhibitions renewing the challenge for us, for the artists and for the Argentinean photography.

Foto Arte 2007 is a lively, well-established international photography conference, festival and series of seminars that attracts great talents and photography lovers from South America and from all over the world. As an important component of this event, photographers can meet there with well-respected photography professionals (international museum curators, gallerists, publishers), to show their portfolios during intense, scheduled formal reviews. Over a busy period of four days (October 18-21), these emerging and established photographers get creative feedback, constructive criticism, business advice — and hopefully an exhibition, gallery representation, or broad exposure through publications in print or on the web.

FOTOFEST2008 – Exhibitions
March 7 – April 20, 2008

FotoFest is focusing on two inter-related themes:

CHINA
TRANSFORMATIONS

FotoFest’s Biennial programs examine these themes through exhibitions of historical and contemporary photography, mixed media installations. A film and video program will accompany the exhibitions as well as forums.

CHINA
At the start of the 21st century, China unquestionably has become one of the major forces in the world. It is not only transforming its own society and economy, it is also changing global economics.

There is enormous cultural and artistic energy throughout China. Despite the number of exhibits of Chinese photography that have been done by institutions outside of China in the last 15 years, it is still difficult for many good photographic artists in China to have access to outside institutions.

FotoFest forged a strong link with contemporary Chinese photography through the FOTOFEST1996 exhibition of Chinese photographer Wu Jialin, who became one of China’s best known photographers as a result of that exhibition. In the past year, FotoFest has done significant programming in China, co-sponsoring a major international portfolio review program in China for Chinese photographic artists (Meeting Place FotoFest Beijing 2006).

As part of its goal to create and maintain a platform for the discovery of important but little known artists, FotoFest will curate/commission shows on China by Chinese photographers for FOTOFEST2008.

For Participating Spaces, this theme can also be extended to work by non-Chinese photographers, work on Chinese culture(s) and Chinese communities abroad, as well as work on other China-related subjects. These works could include Chinese-American artists and other Chinese artists living abroad as well as non-Chinese artists and Chinese artists working in mainland China.

TRANSFORMATIONS

Knowing that the CHINA theme may be too restrictive for spaces interested in being part of the Biennial theme(s), we are including another theme. It much more open and can be interpreted in many ways. It is also central to what is happening in China today and what concerns many contemporary Chinese artists. FotoFest will focus one of its CHINA exhibits on works by Chinese artists relating to the theme of TRANSFORMATIONS.

The TRANFORMATIONS theme, however, is not limited or restricted to China-related work. It can be interpreted however artists and curators would like to represent it. It could related to youth and age, urban environments, physical or psychological metamorphosis, passage of time, architecture, war, technological change, and history, to name just a few areas.
